Years & Ages, “7Years” Poem Analysis

When a person grows older, they will have completely different views about the world around us, which is the reason that we grow throughout time. We might realize that the world around us is not that great as we thought when we are kids, we might also realize that we have different goals to fulfill in different stages of life. This poem clearly showed this point. In this poem, I will talk about how it shows how people change throughout different stages of their life.

The poem talks about the author’s different age groups and their mindset at those times. When he was 7 years old, “Once I was seven years old my momma told me, Go make yourself some friends or you'll be lonely” At that time he was too young to think by his own, just like other kids his parents told him to make more friends, walk into the world surround him. when it came to the age of eleven, I always had that dream like my daddy before me. So I started writing songs, I started writing stories. Something about that glory just always seemed to bore me. 'Cause only those I really love will ever really know me” he starts to write songs and stories, tries to let people that love him remember about him, at this stage of life, I think he’s not very sure about what why he is doing it, why he is trying to let people remember him, instead he is copying what his father is doing, which is a tendency that kids always have. At the age comes to 20, he became like a teenager, he believes that there is nothing that can stop him, he started to have goals about his life, “I only see my goals, I don't believe in failure, 'Cause I know the smallest voices, they can make it major. I got my boys with me at least those in favor, And if we don't meet before I leave, I hope I'll see you later.” He also started to get best friends that are always on his side, starting to have clear views about the world and in the same time keeping a positive attitude toward life. After another ten years, he’s 30 now, he started to think about life, already have his own family and children, he would take care of his kids and sing the songs to them. When he became 60 now, he thinks that the world is cold because there are no one around him, but at least he got his family, even though they don’t visit a lot. 

The tone throughout the lyrics is usually peaceful, but the music will change all the time in different parts of the lyrics, representing his mood in different periods of time. From the start it was very peaceful, showing that kids won't really be having that much goals or passions at that period of time because they still are figuring out the world. When he talks about the time he was 11 and 20 years old, the drums came in and you can hear that there is more and more passion that part. But when it comes to 30 years old, he changes his opinion a lot, he had his own family and children, where he can not be that passion as he was young, and it turns more like an inheriting in a form of singing to his children just like his father. In the end, when he was old, he was lonely and angry about it, so the music turns to an angry mood. I like that the singer/producer is making a difference throughout these life periods, it clearly shows how people change their minds throughout time. I think in this song, the singer is trying to present the fact that there are different things happens to us and we change throughout these experiences.

This song really greatly showed how people change their minds throughout different periods of time. After I first heard this song, it quickly made me relate the song to my own life, thinking about how my mind changed throughout the past years. Now, after years, looking back to the song, it shows me something new that I’ve never thought about before, for example I realize that I think more deeply about things around me, which for Me is another way that the song show us how we grow throughout years.
